The many facets of Amy Martin

More than a writer, I am an educator working in a variety of mass media by articulating complex, provocative, and sometimes highly technical issues. I initiate discussions, organize projects and serve as a conduit to bring people and ideas together. This is done out of a deep sense of service to mankind and belief in the power of individual action and positive change through communication.

Amy Martin, a lifelong Texan, has forged a varied career in journalism, laced with activism and leadership, and infused with a deep spirituality and concern for the Earth. A journalist and writer for over 40 years, she is the author of Wild DFW: Explore the Amazing Nature In and Around Dallas-Fort Worth (Timber Press). Currently senior features writer for GreenSource DFW, she is also writing the biography of Ned Fritz, Texas’ most important environmentalist. Her other books include Itchy Business: How to Treat the Poison Ivy and Poison Oak Rash, Holy Smokes: Loose Herbs & Hot Embers for Intense Group Smudges & Smoke Prayers, and Speaking of Mother Earth (co-author).

In prior years, she was contributing editor and Dear Garbage columnist for the national magazine Garbage (recycling and features), and has written for Dallas Morning News (recycling), Dallas Observer (music), TheaterJones (comedy, magic, and cirque), and D magazine and Dallas Times Herald (performing arts).

Martin sits on the Trails And Preserves Program board of Dallas County Open Space and is the state social media director for Native Prairies Association of Texas. She assists a number of nonprofit groups and is a popular speaker.

Martin managed a private nature preserve in Northeast Texas for 12 years, where she converted 15 acres into tallgrass prairie and rehabilitated wildlife habitat. She now volunteers in the Dixon Branch Greenbelt of her Eastwood neighborhood and for North Texas Master Naturalists.

For 15 years, Martin also operated a popular alternative news service called Moonlady News, derived from her nickname Moonlady. A leader in Earth-centered and unaffiliated spirituality, Martin was director of Earth Rhythms and creator/producer of the acclaimed Summer and Winter SolstiCelebrations for 20 years.
